The Park, Wednesday afternoon

Artie was out and about in the park with a butterfly net.

This might have something to do with those foul freaky feathered fiends, the ducks.

It also might have something to do with the fact that Mortimer, his buggy companion, is nowhere in sight.

It's Artie. Who knows, really?

Jude chuckled. "When I'm up in Algonquin I do," he drawled.

"Fantastic!" Artie bounded into an very straight standing position, then leaned forward, bending at the hips, to offer Jude his hand. "I am Artie! The strongest man . . . in the World! It is always a pleasure to meet a fellow conoseur of the canoe!"

Jude, completely not phrased by the bounding, posing, overuse of italics, introduction, and love of canoes, shook his hand. "I'm Jude, bro."

Artie shook heartily indeed, then struck another pose, as he does. "Tell me, Jude, do you prefer the smooth sailing of fresh cut grass, or the bumpy rapids of an elementary school parking lot when you canoe?"

"I prefer water, bro," Jude replied placidly. "Parking lots are better for skating. But I've never tried grass so I can't form an opinion of it at the moment."

"Haven't tried?" Artie blinked. "Well, we will have to fix that!"

And he bounded away.

And returned, moments later, effortlessly rowing a canoe across the grassy park.

"Hop in, my viking! Hop in!"

Awesome.

"Wicked, bro!" Jude grinned as he settled into the canoe with his board across his needs. "Want me to help paddle?"

"Certainly!" Artie offered him a spare oar.

Don't ask where he got that from.

"And perhaps we should sing a jaunty tune?"

Jude wasn't exactly sure how he was supposed to propel the canoe forward, having only had experience with, y'know, water. But he went with the flow and paddled. It seemed to work. Somehow.

"Sure, bro," he chuckled.

Artie took a deep breath and leaned back, then started singing.

United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama
Haiti, Jamaica, Peru,
Republic Dominican, Cuba, Carribean, Greenland
El Salvador, too!

Jude would be singing along if he knew the words. But he didn't. He was, however, paddling in time.

This was kinda cool.

He should tell Jen. Maybe she could get grass-travelling canoes in at the Penalty Box.

Artie steered the canoe to the right and off the grass, onto the asphault of the road by the park.

Probably just wanted to give his new friend the full land canoe experience.

"Whoa, dude," Jude said as the ride got bumpier. "Awwwwwwwwwwwesome."

Yep, definitely talking to Jen. He wondered how land canoes did on tile.

Artie opened his mouth to continue, but seemed to have forgotten the words as he started singing something a bit stranger.

Jude didn't know the right words anyway. He was, however, humming along to the tune as he paddled, a blissful, zen-like expression on his face. Let nothing harsh this boy's mellow.
